The course

What makes my course different?

'Creativity and design through Computer Science' is an approximately 3 month long course that aims to increase female enrollment in computer science. Unlike other computer science courses, the course uses nudge theory and principles of behavioural economics to encourage female enrollment and participation in computer science. It ensures that each topic is easily approachable and simple, while still teaching all the necessary skills needed to create a game, animation etc. I have implemented 'nudges' in the form of graphics and design that allow the students to design their own activities, tailor their learning to their interests and express their creativity while learning the fundamentals of the Python programming language.

What are the benefits to learning python?

Python is one of the most commonly used programming languages, and therefore in an increasingly technology-driven world, it is imperative for students to be equipped with these skills. My goal is to facilitate financial independence and improve occupational mobility for young girls in Pakistan, who often have limited access to formal education. Upon completing this course, the girls will be able to program simple games, animations and pictures which will therefore allow them to explore opportunities in freelance, all while working from home. It also provides the girls with the foundation knowledge that they will need to pursue more specialised computer science courses to further their education.

Current schools

The course has currently been implemented in 3 different schools in Pakistan: The Kiran Foundation, The Memon Industrial Technical Institute and the Imran Rehabilitation Center. In the future the course will also be implemented in state schools in Sindh, Pakistan through the government of Sindh.
